Island 731 by Jeremy Robinson, this book opens with a wounded WW2 naval man washed ashore on an island awakened from being eaten by scavengers. A short time later a glimpse of the real horror is revealed.
The book switches gears and chimes in on a modern-day research vessel studying the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. Said vessel ends up on the island due to sabotage and a storm. People are dead and 1 is missing and a part of the crew go looking for missing mate on the island. Strange things are discovered and we eventually learn about Unit 731. This is where it got really good, in my opinion.
I researched Unit 731 and was shocked to learn that it actually existed and what it was. I invite you to do the same if you have no idea what Unit 731 is. I love it when an author takes historical events and weaves them into a story.
The island of Doctor Moreau came to mind as I continued to listen. The action ramps up as more discoveries are made but I don't want to give any spoilers. The action kept me listening and interested throughout the book. I recommend this book and other books written or recorded by Jeremy Robinson.
