Girl Gone Reading: That f**king Wookie mask again... and a love story

Updated: Mar 12, 2020

Some how, some way, that video of the woman wearing the Wookie mask came across my social media account again. I may have laughed harder than most because I actually have one. I fell in love with it the moment I put it on and wore it for about an hour and laughed every time I opened my mouth. (If you haven't seen the video, just google "mom wearing wookie mask" and it'll show up.)

This past summer during my annual Girl's Weekend I put it on while they were gathered at the fire pit and tried to scare them. The scare didn't go well, but I ended up on my back next to the fire laughing my ass off. Win.

Anyway, I sent a photo of my mask to a friend and she pointed out a book on my shelf that caught her attention. I was shocked I hadn’t written about it yet. The author is Christopher Moore and he's as hysterical as he is brilliant.

The book my friend asked about was You Suck, A Love Story and it was the first book I had ever read by Mr. Moore. When I finished it, I went to Barnes & Noble (before it was moved to Colonie Center Mall - oh how I miss that location!) and scoured the shelves for every book he had out at the time and I bought them all.

You Suck is a sequel to Blood Sucking Fiends, but I didn't realize it at the time. I didn't feel as if I were missing anything, it was a "complete" story, however once I did read Blood Sucking Fiends, I realized I missed quite a bit and here's why.

Mr. Moore seamlessly does what very few other authors do well, and that's bring back characters from story to story (even if they're not in the same series) and that means you should read Blood Sucking Fiends before You Suck only so that you can enjoy the cross-over and make it seem as if the book simply continues - because it does. When it comes to Mr. Moore's books they're never long enough and I don't want them to end. Some folks argue the books are stand-alone as stories and yes, that's true, but take my recommendation on this one.

The main character in Blood Sucking Fiends is Jody, and she didn't ask to be a vampire. She was attacked, and since then multiple murders started happening around the city and both Tommy and Jody believe Jody's attacker is responsible.

The main character (in You Suck) is Tommy Flood (a.k.a. C. Thomas Flood) and he's pissed off. His girlfriend, Jody, happens to be a vampire and the first words in You Suck are "You bitch, you killed me! You suck!"

As a result, the characters who come into both stories will have you laughing out loud. There are a group of vampire hunters who work at the local Safeway (with Tommy,) a homeless man and his dog known as The Emperor (the dog, not the man) who seems to have knowledge of everything going on in the city, and of course, Jody's attacker.

I found myself falling in love with all of the characters, especially The Emperor, but the beauty of Moore's writing is that it all sounds so realistic, so normal, like these people are living on your block. And don't get me wrong, it is laugh out loud funny, but Jody is a vampire, so there are a few brutal paragraphs.

Please check out this series or ANYTHING by Christopher Moore!
