It feels like a luxury being able to step away from all that's going not just in our country, but around the world. I recognize that some need a break, because they're able to take one. If that's you, I've got a book series you're going to love.
This is the first series I've read by author Leigh Bardugo and I was really impressed. I hadn't heard of her and I tend to read quite a bit of fantasy. Ms. Bardugo is a #1 New York Times bestselling author of fantasy and the creator of the "Grishaverse" which is coming to Netflix soon. It'll span the Shadow and Bone Trilogy, the Six of Crows Duaology, The Language of Thorns, and King of Scars. If you're a reader that MUST read the books first, start here.
Don't be turned off by the 'fantasy' aspect because it's in no way a sci-fi thing. It's more like Harry Potter in that some people are born with special abilities and they're either loved or feared - but it's not HP type magic. There is a love story, adventure, a hero (shero), and even a Hunger Games aspect in the first book.
The main character, Alina, is an orphan when we meet her and her male best friend Mal. At a very young age, six if I'm remembering correctly, a group of 'King's men' go from town to town looking for children who have a special ability. Those who do are called Grishas. It's a nice, new concept of 'magic' I hadn't seen before so I was immediately intrigued by the direction it would take.
I don't want to give spoilers, of course, so I will tell you it has been a very long time since I've thought about a book when I'm not actively reading it. I keep finding myself wondering what the characters were doing, or where they were going, and I would get frustrated when simply too tired to keep reading at night.
It's a light read - meaning the audience is geared toward teens/young adult, but the story and concept absolutely kept my interest the whole time. Ms. Bardugo is a great storyteller, and this evening I will be downloading Six of Crows.
If you need a break and have the time to take one, give this trilogy a read. It's available here - all three books - for $19.89.
