Girl Gone Reading: Up for a porn star?

I read this book ages ago, 2004 to be precise, and I'm about to read it again. I'm making some pretty big personal decisions in the near future and in all honesty, I could stand to absorb the inspiration the whole experience provided me the fist time around.

I want to talk about a book, or more precisely, the author of a book. It’s titled How to Make Love Like A Porn Star: A Cautionary Tale by Jenna Jameson. It’s an autobiography written by the famous porn star and I wasn’t sure what to expect. I love autobiographies written by controversial people, people whose story you think you would NEVER have interest.

You may think porn stars are ‘bad’ or ‘unethical’ or have views you don’t agree with in any type of way, and you don’t want to give them your money. That’s fine, but that’s also the beauty of books isn’t it? You can read whatever you like at any time. I like to be challenged, hear other perspectives, know someone else’s story, and I always, always learn from it. So allow me to challenge you on this one. If you're over 18 of course.

Ms. Jameson wrote this book (with co-author Neil Strauss) in 2004. As I mentioned, I wasn’t sure what to expect and before I even cracked the book open I wondered if it was really a tutorial like the title suggests. The answer is no. (Except for one very small section within a chapter, lol. I'll let you find it.) Let me warn you though, this book is NOT FOR CHILDREN. There are photos and stories that are simply not appropriate for kids.

The story is told from the first person perspective and reads almost like a diary with some sections written in a hand-writing script, photos from Ms. Jameson’s childhood, and interviews with friends and family members. What I was struck by the most was her honesty. She puts every little detail out there and at times, I was uncomfortable reading it. Not because of what she does for a living as an adult, but because of the things that happened to her as a child and teenager.

She was abused, raped, beaten, addicted to drugs, and her first marriage failed, but the magic of her story is how she struggled so rigorously and managed to become healthy and successful through all of her challenges.

You may be questioning my definition of success at this point, but Ms. Jameson is strong. She has survived things most of us can’t even imagine. She has grown to run her own adult business, manages her own clothing line, has appeared in mainstream movies and television, and How to Make Love Like A Porn Star spent six weeks on the New York Times best seller list.

Do not discount an amazing true story simply because of the subject matter. If you like gritty, honest autobiographies, I challenge you to read this book and I think you’ll be as surprised as I was. And if you're inclined, give her a follow on Instagram @jennacantlose. You can see what the star, Mom, and business guru is up to lately.

I know some of you may not approve of this recommendation so let me have it – the good, the bad, and the ugly. And of course if you’ve read it, please share your thoughts.
