I'm not going to tell you which politicians to vote for, but I am going to suggest voting for me, for you, and for your children. I care about a lot of issues facing our country right now, but one in particular affects so many people and some don't even realize it yet. I'm talking about the move to take away protections for pre-existing conditions.
Nov. 1, 2018 – Allowing insurance companies to exclude preexisting conditions from health insurance coverage could cost consumers with asthma, arthritis, cancer, diabetes, and high blood pressure thousands of dollars in increased out-of-pocket costs, according to a report out today from the Commonwealth Fund. -- yubanet.com
Regardless of how many times the current president tweets these protections will remain, the fact is they are already being stripped and his political allies have admitted it.
Trump, Sept. 29: I will always fight for, and always protect, patients with preexisting conditions. You have to do it. You have to do it. Some people think that’s not a Republican thing to do. I don’t care, and I’ll tell you what. All of the Republicans are coming in to that position now. All of them. And we’ll do it the right way too. Preexisting conditions are safe. OK? Just remember that. Preexisting — tell that to the fake news media when they write. Fakers. --Trump Tweet
Trump’s comments contradict the Justice Department’s actions, which Trump approved, according to a letter from the Justice Department to Congress. He's lying and he knows it.
All I want to do here is tell you what this means for me and maybe have you look into what it really means for you.
If I decide to move to a full-time job instead of consulting, the insurance company my company uses can deny me coverage for having Rheumatoid Arthritis.
Right now I'm covered under my husband. If he changes jobs, the insurance company his new company uses can deny him spousal coverage.
Insurance companies will be allowed to charge people like me up to three times their normal fee if they agree to cover me at all.
If I have to go on disability or unemployment sometime in my life (an unfortunate reality for me) then I can be denied coverage even though I've paid into both since I was 15 years old.
I can die from my disease. Without proper medical care, I will die sooner.
My husband and I do well financially - that could be wiped out within a year. Doctor visits, specialists, and medications are insanely expensive.
In our case, we could go from being a completely sufficient household that contributes to the economy, to one where I may need social services just to get by. Millions of households are in this same position.
What does this mean for you, your spouse, or children?
Asthma, allergies, cancer, diabetes, depression, high-blood pressure, arthritis, MS, celiac disease, etc. Does breast cancer run in your family? Does your kid wear glasses? Do they have or need braces?
You think you won't be affected but you will be, or someone you dearly love will be. They're playing with our lives and our livelihood.
For me it's a matter of staying alive. That's why I will never sit down and shut the fuck up - which several people keep trying to tell me to do but it's not going to happen - ever. I'm fighting for you and your kids too, even if you won't fight for me or your own family.
Do the right thing today. If you think our society already relies too heavily on GoFundMe, or if you think too many people leach off the system, you haven't seen anything yet.
