Right this very moment I'm sitting at a small café in the French Quarter of New Orleans drinking tea. To my left is a bar full of neon lights claiming to be open 24 hours and some of the patrons look as if they've tested those hours. To my right is a shop where The Number One Psychic Voodoo Queen will be available at 12pm for personal readings.
It's my first time in this city and though I want to see the French Quarter and Bourbon Street, I came for the cemeteries, ghost tours, and independently owned book shops. Anne Rice lives here, and she brought a whole generation into the world of vampires and witches and inspired my desire to visit this city.
Yesterday was my best day so far. I met an older gentleman who talked to me about a few of his favorite book stores but he immediately sent me to The Garden District Book Shop. (Seriously. He walked me to the street car and made me get on.) This was perfect as it is right next door to Lafayette Cemetery No. 1.
I mentioned in my introduction that I’m a fan of Gail Carriger. If you’re into the supernatural with a steampunk twist, this is the author for you. I had never read steampunk before Carriger and truly had no interest. I have to admit I may have been a bit intimidated as well. I thought for sure it would be all about air ships, mechanicals, and engineering. While there is a touch of each in her books, it was so ‘light’ as to only be in support of the characters’ various stories.
Her first series, The Parasol Protectorate, is comprised of five books. There are vampires, werewolves, ghosts, and perhaps most important – a soulless. You’ll have to read her first book to find out exactly what that means.
I found myself in love with the characters almost immediately and I laughed all the way through each book. Have you ever had a friend you looked at often and thought: “I can’t believe you just said that out loud?” That’s what it feels like reading her books.
