My mother didn't have a lot of rules but she did have two. At about 18 months she handed me a book and said, "Read every day." When I was three, she handed me a pencil and said, "Write every day." She read the NY Times to me with my mashed banana and Perry Mason at bedtime.
I'm that little girl who hated dolls and tea parties and liked monster movies and books. All the books. And writing. It doesn't matter what you write about and it doesn't matter if your high school English teacher would red pencil the hell out of it. Just write. Everyday. Make my mom happy.
